Blog Post 5: Changes to my study programme

I am a first-year journalism student, and because of this, as I'm just starting my university career, I don't yet have the necessary perspective to know what changes could be made to the curriculum. It's possible that I would add courses related to new technologies, such as artificial intelligence or online media, in addition to traditional media.

Considering it from that perspective, perhaps a much more updated infrastructure may be necessary. The television studio is becoming obsolete compared to other journalism schools. Also, in other countries, the degree takes four years, unlike in Chile, where its formal duration is five years.

Journalism is the major with the highest percentage of regrets after completing the degree, and this might be due to how precarious journalistic work has become. Journalists typically have to realize multiple roles in their work since journalistic outlets seek to save as much as possible on costs. In addition to this, journalists tend to be targeted by both the public and law enforcement. While there are laws protecting freedom of expression, it's difficult to protect a journalist who isn't working for a traditional media outlet or doesn't have a university degree.

Nevertheless, the professors in the program are excellent. Having experienced the challenges of the working world, they are usually quite understanding when issues emanate that prevent us from attending classes, such as when an interview opportunity arises.
